Traditionally, people tend to put forth more applications during the holidays than any other time of the season for obvious reasons. You can take advantage of this yearly hiring spree by thinking long term instead of just for holiday cash.

Many workers get hired for seasonal jobs during the holidays without having any intentions to try and get hired for the long term; this is where you come in!

Here are some tips to turn a November and December entry-level job into a year round career:

1. First and foremost, set out to prove you are a dependable worker. Get to work ahead of your scheduled time consistently; this will help you stand out in the eyes of management.

Recent studies show more than half of all employed workers are late to work at least 1/3 of the time. So, in a way, management expects workers to be a little inconsistent in arriving to work in a timely manner.

Get to work on time, and you already have an advantage.

2. Go out of your way to be helpful and friendly to other staff members. for example, if a CVS pharmacist needs assistance in retrieving an over-the-counter medicine for a customer, let them know they can count on you for help. As a matter of fact, let the pharmacy staff you’re available whenever a customer needs assistance in the aisles.

3. Become familiar with the merchandise in the store by studying the items in every aisle for the first few days. You’ll look like a million dollars when a customer asks you for help and you’re able to lead them right to the item after a mere three days of working at CVS! Not only that, managers notice these kinds of things easily.

4. Try to develop a respectful relationship with the store manager and never hesitate to ask questions about how the store operates. This will let them know you are interested in a full-time career with the company. While we’re on that subject, be direct at some point and let the manager know you want a CVS career.

Do you find yourself pondering whether or not you should submit a CVS job application, or any application for that matter because you have it so darn good at home?

Search for local retail jobs at Beyond.com

Well, if you’re a lazy bum who perhaps, lives at home with Mom and Dad, if you’re in between jobs and taking a much needed and deserved 6 month break courtesy of Uncle Sam’ s paycheck we’re all paying taxes for, if you’ve been kicked out of your parent’s house and your Aunt Lucy’s already sick and tired of you after one day because you’re a refrigerator raider, why not submit an online CVS application?

What’s the worst that can happen? Yeah, I know – you can get hired! Why - you lazy bum!

My definition of a lazy bum is simple; someone who refuses to work and mooches off other people. There’s one in every family or circle of friends!

This really is no laughing matter. It amazes me how many quality people with great work histories put in an application for CVS or any other company for that matter, and instead, the bum with no experience who’s done nothing but sit on a couch until he or she finally throws up a three pointer up in the air from mid-court is the one who gets the job!

I’ve heard of qualified people getting passed over for a – yep – you guessed it – a lazy, unqualified bum! There really is no rhyme or reason to the hiring process in virtually every company. Sometimes the interviewer is having a bad day or doesn’t like what he or she sees on the surface of an experienced, prospective employee, sometimes a person (like you bums) can fool an interviewer, and sometimes a computer spits out derogatory information about an excellent candidate who has a blemish on his or her work history record years ago rendering their application worthless. Whatever the case, it makes sense for these qualified people to keep trying to get hired with other companies, while you, the bum, sit at home missing work a mere week after you’ve been hired, wondering if you’ll call in sick again tomorrow.

The good news is; once you’re hired to work at CVS, your bum-ship will probably disappear quickly or you’ll be out of a job quicker than you can say, “Why can’t they see me for what I am, a bum!”

If you fit the certified “bum” criteria, my advice to you is to get off your lazy derriere and level out the playing field – hey, the truth is…everybody deserves a chance. Go out and apply for a job at CVS and make yourself proud for even applying. Studies show many people who are generally deemed lazy and jobless are actually people who are unwilling to take that first step because they’re actually scared of “change.”

On the flip side, those of you who are go-getters but unlucky enough to have been laid off or watch your business go sour, take a dive into the CVS world of employment. But be forewarned; you just might love what you see and stay there until retirement!

Oh, and parents everywhere, rejoice! Your kids (some of them ex-bums) are out of the house and working at CVS.

Retail businesses are built upon excellence in customer service, and it’s no secret companies including CVS spend time and money on instilling this belief in their employees when they are first hired. Without proper customer service, customers are not likely to return, and without repeat customers, businesses are dead in the water.

If you are to get hired at CVS, it’s a great idea to start thinking you will be able to offer the greatest customer service possible; this way, when the time comes during your interview, you can convey that feeling sincerely to the person conducting your interview if necessary.

If you think about it, what would you think about just one CVS store close to your home with a nasty employee with a horrible attitude working there? Would you frequent that specific store, or would you just travel 2 miles further on down the road to not have to deal with that person upon check-out? Most people would take the trip and avoid that person altogether, even if they had to waste an extra .50 cents in gasoline!

In short, one person can single-handedly ruin a store’s reputation if the problem isn’t dealt with by administrative staff.

So, be courteous to customers, and always try to offer a sincere, friendly smile. Be proactive in helping customers with their needs, even if you only had 5 hours of sleep last night; one needless, negative episode where you fail to help a customer can haunt you in management’s eyes for a long time.

Contrary to popular belief, the customer really is not always right, but as a CVS employee, or an employee anywhere, you should stay above the fray and be the better person.

A simple “I’m sorry you couldn’t find what you were looking for,” or “Thanks for informing me about (something negative and not to their liking),” can go a long way in pleasing the customer and turning a sour situation into a manageable one. Be humble. Of course you’ll run into an idiot every now and then but don’t take it personal, and accept the fact that you are not going to change that person.

If you’re seeking a part-time or full-time hourly job with CVS, consider a customer service job. Some people mistakenly believe this position is the easiest because it is an entry-level job. I’m here to tell you that’s not so!

As a customer service employee you will be responsible for a variety of duties which lead directly to providing great customer service to your customers so they feel like CVS has met all their expectations. One minute your duties may be be to work the cash register, and the next, you may be directed by management to stock merchandise or help a customer find what they need.

What you must also understand about this important job is that you are usually the first person a customer sees and/or interacts with, so a pleasant, friendly disposition is an absolute must if you want to have any success.

There is no doubt you’ll find unhappy employees no matter where you find a job. At my local CVS, for example, sometimes I cringe at the checkout register while watching a disgruntled employee muttering under her breath that the manager is making her work too much. This employee is a fairly recent addition because I’ve been their customer for a couple of years; needless to say, this attitude will catch up to her one day and be her demise because CVS prides themselves on the absolute greatest customer service

The absolute best part of this CVS job is the chance to really dig into how the store actually operates. Don’t hesitate to ask your manager questions about the store’s operational process during non-peak hours; you just may be in his or her shoes one day if you learn the tricks of the trade and play your cards right!

In 41 states around the US, a job in CVS is an important one; the majority of people turn to CVS for all of their pharmacy needs which makes hiring quality employees a must for this successful company.

One interesting fact about this company is the way it focuses on hiring and recruiting pharmacy students who attend colleges with large minority populations. This ensures the hiring of the most qualified workers from all cultures; this is a huge contributing reason for their success.

As a CVS pharmacist employee, you are joining a company that stresses taking the utmost care of all patients who walk through their doors and offering unmatched courtesy, service, and quality. The company takes pride in their commitment to all of their employees, and they believe in providing pharmacists with the latest and best technology, the knowledge to succeed, on-going training, and recognition for their services.

Workers looking for non-management positions can submit a CVS job application online or at any particular store of their choice. These positions include:

Customer Service

Beauty Advisor

Shift Supervisor

Pharmacy Technician

There are other CVS careers to consider at the corporate level as well as distribution center jobs. Their corporate headquarters is located close to Boston, MA and Providence, RI, so you can search online for any open positions there.

Company distribution jobs at their 16 different locations cover everything from director to human resources to piece picker/order selector.

For example, a recent college grad can apply at CVS and begin through their entry-level management program, progress as an assistant store manager quickly, then look forward to becoming a store manager within two short years. By slight contrast, a qualified candidate with three or more years of experience in retail can become a store manager even quicker.

A definite plus to submitting a CVS application is this company’s ongoing training program which covers every stage of your progress as an employee.

It doesn’t end there; if you are talented enough and you have your sights set on one of the many corporate jobs at CVS, there’s plenty of opportunity for you to do so. These positions include district or region manager, field management positions, and possibly a position as vice president.

As far as benefits are concerned, with this company, you are in great hands. From their 401k plan to their paid vacation and holiday pay, all the regular insurance bases offered by established companies are covered,

To apply for hourly retail positions, you can visit the store and fill out a job application at CVS in person. For management positions, you can apply online at their main website.
